Solar Module Inspection Plan

Define the order, lot, defect classes, sampling scheme, methods, evidence and release decision before an inspection begins. An inspector name alone does not define a useful scope.

Short answer

A useful inspection plan is order-specific. It links the exact product and lot to objective defect classes, a declared sampling scheme, controlled methods, traceable records, non-conformance handling and a written release decision. Inspection does not replace model-specific certificates, factory due diligence or the PI.

Write These Six Fields First

The plan should be agreed before sample selection, testing, packing or shipment release.

Order and lot identity

Record seller, legal manufacturer, production site, exact model, nameplate, quantity, lot boundaries and destination.

Defect classes

Define critical, major and minor non-conformities with objective examples instead of leaving classification to the inspection day.

Sampling scheme

State lot size, inspection level, AQL index, sample size, random-selection method and acceptance or rejection values.

Methods and conditions

Name each visual, dimensional, label, packing, EL or I-V method, equipment condition, calibration evidence and record format.

Hold points

Set when inspection may start, what prevents packing or shipment, who receives a non-conformance and who can authorize the next step.

Correction and release

Define containment, correction evidence, reinspection scope, unresolved deviation handling and the written release record.

Four Different Inspection Stages

Each stage answers a different question. A pre-shipment result does not rule out transport or installation damage.

    Before production

    Freeze the offered model, entities, factory, document scope, quality plan and inspection hold points for the order.

  2. 02

    During production

    Use only when the agreed risk plan calls for process witnessing, material traceability or in-process evidence.

  3. 03

    Before shipment

    Verify the defined lot, random sample, visual and packing criteria, selected EL or I-V records, non-conformities and release status.

  4. 04

    After arrival

    A pre-installation check can identify transport or handling damage and establish a batch baseline before mounting.

Methods Are Complementary

Select methods for the decision and stage. No single inspection method proves every quality, safety or reliability attribute.

Visual and identity review

Nameplate, serials, appearance, dimensions, labels, packing and quantity against the accepted order.

It cannot reveal every internal cell, electrical or long-term reliability issue.

EL imaging

Captures module electroluminescence features under defined equipment and operating conditions.

The report needs the method, image identity, capture stage and agreed interpretation or acceptance criteria.

I-V measurement

Measures photovoltaic current-voltage characteristics under controlled natural or simulated light conditions.

Traceability, measurement conditions, calibration and serial-level linkage matter as much as the curve image.

Arrival and field methods

Pre-installation EL or other field methods can investigate transport, handling and installation-related issues.

No single method detects every failure mode; select complementary methods for the actual decision and stage.

Select the Body for the Scope

ISO/IEC 17020 addresses inspection bodies; ISO/IEC 17025 addresses testing and calibration laboratories. A company name does not prove the exact local office, method or laboratory scope needed for an order.

Inspection-body scope

Check competence, impartiality, consistent operation and the exact accredited or assessed scope relevant to the work.

Laboratory scope

When laboratory testing or calibration is part of the plan, confirm the applicable ISO/IEC 17025 scope, method and location.

Local capability

Confirm personnel, equipment, method edition, language, site access, reporting format and conflict-of-interest controls for this order.

Commercial boundary

The chosen body should quote its current scope, timing, travel and testing directly. Cost allocation and access are agreed per order.

Buyer Questions

Is AQL 2.5 the correct sampling plan for every module order?

No. ISO 2859-1 indexes sampling schemes by AQL, but the order still needs its lot size, inspection level, defect classes, sample size, acceptance and rejection values, switching rules and random-selection method. One AQL label is not a universal full-lot quality promise.

Which inspection company should a buyer choose?

Choose against the required scope, not a marketing ranking. Check the inspection body's competence and impartiality, its relevant scope, local personnel and equipment, method edition, laboratory scope where applicable, report format, conflicts and current commercial quotation.
