Short Answer: Start With the Duty
A BESS is not sized from solar capacity alone. Define the required duty first: backup, peak reduction, time shifting, grid service, island operation or another use case. Each duty changes the power, usable energy, controls, cycling and interconnection requirements.
Size From Buyer-Owned Inputs
For an initial backup screen, nominal energy starts with critical load multiplied by required backup time, then adjusts for usable depth of discharge and system efficiency. Final design also needs the measured interval load, surge power, ambient conditions, redundancy, degradation, reserve margin and operating strategy.
Treat Chemistry as an Engineering Decision
Do not select chemistry from a generic cycle-life or safety slogan. Compare the offered cell and system evidence, thermal-management design, operating window, transport requirements, warranty conditions, service route and authority requirements for the project location.
Safety and Interconnection Are Site-Specific
Use the current fire, electrical, building, transport and grid requirements adopted by the local authority and utility. DOE procurement guidance is a checklist, not a universal approval. Require the integrator to identify the applicable system listing, test evidence, emergency plan, commissioning scope and responsible parties.
Verify Performance After Commissioning
Define metering and acceptance tests before purchase. NREL and DOE describe using measured charge and discharge data to evaluate capacity and efficiency over time. Record the baseline, test conditions, exclusions and remedy path in the technical annex and contract package.
