How to Calculate Solar Project ROI: Complete Guide for B2B Buyers
A buyer-owned solar cash-flow method for NPV, IRR, payback and LCOE using project-specific energy, tariff, cost, finance and risk inputs.
Short Answer: ROI Comes From Cash Flow, Not Module Price
A low module price does not prove a profitable project. Build annual project cash flows from buyer-owned energy, tariff, capital cost, operating cost, tax, financing, curtailment, replacement and residual-value assumptions. Keep every input dated and attributable.
Choose the Correct Financial Model
Behind-the-meter projects value avoided bills and export compensation. PPA and merchant projects value electricity sales under different debt and tax structures. NREL SAM provides separate financial models because one formula cannot represent every ownership and revenue arrangement.
Build the Energy Case First
Use project weather, layout, equipment, soiling, availability, degradation and curtailment assumptions. PVWatts is useful for an initial estimate but states that its predictions contain assumptions and uncertainty. Use a detailed, independently reviewed model for investment or tender decisions.
Build Base, Downside and Upside Cases
Change only documented variables: generation, self-consumption, tariff or PPA price, CAPEX, OPEX, financing, tax, replacement and operating period. Show which inputs belong to the buyer and which came from a supplier. A website scenario is not a revenue, savings, IRR or payback promise.
Interpret the Metrics Carefully
Simple payback ignores the timing of cash flows. NPV depends on the discount rate and complete cash-flow model. IRR can be misleading with unusual cash-flow patterns. LCOE measures cost per unit of modeled energy and does not by itself prove project profit. Review the metrics together with risk and financing constraints.
Submit the Project Inputs
Use the RFQ button below and send country, buyer type, destination port, product target and volume. Add the energy model, ownership structure and tender or PPA constraints when available. Frank Yang reviews fit at Director level; product scope, price, availability, delivery and payment terms are confirmed only in the formal response, offer or PI. Financial results remain buyer-owned scenarios.
